Another View of Afghanistan: A Study in Ethical Contrasts

Tuesday October 22, 2009 7pm
Scotiabank Theatre, Saint Mary's University

"One of the problems we have in this country is that our knowledge of Afghanistan is being shaped by the media which rarely gets beyond Kandahar. And that's a major ethical problem." Hon. Flora MacDonald

Former Tory Cabinet minister in the Joe Clark and Brian Mulroney eras, Flora MacDonald was the first woman to become a Minister of Foreign Affairs in Canada and also the first women to make a run for the leadership of the Progressive Conservative Party. After losing her seat in Parliament in the 1988 Federal Election, Flora has been working tirelessly in the humanitarian sector. Flora established the Future Generations Canada Foundation and with a modest 75, 000.00 dollar annual budget and one Afghan- Canadian employee, Flora encourages Afghan people to develop their own approach to ensure a more sustainable and secure future.

Flora will examine the ethics contrasts of how people, living in the 33 other Afghan Provinces outside Kandahar, are surviving and making progress in a way that is self- directed and not determined by the Western work ethic.

Keynote: Hon. Flora MacDonald
